This full-time, four-week (twenty days) Mass Timber course is an in-depth training program focusing on building with mass timber. The course is comprised of several components. There is an in-class component focusing on the characteristics of wood and on the forces applied (sheer, compression, and tension). The advantages of using wood are also explored with a focus of sustainable building materials, carbon sequestering, fire resistance because of charring, and other unique characteristics of this material. Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), Glue Laminated Timber, Nail Laminated Timber, as well as other building options, are introduced and discussed. Screws and fasteners are also studied, including the understanding of ductility, and determining fastener selection and placement from the drawings of the CLT modules. The safe and effective use of various timber framing tools is also covered (i.e. large chisels, slicks, chainsaws, beam saws, chain Mortimer, large hand power planes and boring jigs as they apply to Mass Timber building.)
The Rigging/Signaling component comprises five days of the course and is also hands-on, working with a mobile crane and operator. Students will use their rigging/signaling skills to construct four full scale mass timber models using CLT and Glulam components.
